Brain Candy

I received this link to an article on an unschooling list I belong to. I wanted to share it here. Brain Candy It’s a book review of “Everything Bad for you is Good for You”. I haven’t been lucky enough to read the book yet.

My kids LOVE video games. The spend a lot of time on the computer. It’s funny that given their age difference, video games really brings them together. We’ve been blessed as a family to not have to worry to much about computers or electronics in TJ’s line of work. We each have our own. Lately, probably due to some cabin fever, we’ve been having some real struggles with the games. I really thought I had let it go. I let go my assumptions and my feelings and just allowed free play. I began to see the learning . Especially with the depth of the games these days. Strategy, reading, math: my three year old is learning to read because he plays video games! He knows the alphabet because of video games. He doesn’t know how to recite the alphabet, he knows the actual letters when you show him. Which in my mind is more important than understanding the order. Skylar has been making comic books, and showing an interest in animation, he can strategize, his real life math skills are probably right up to par or better than most kids his age. So this blog is a reminder to myself, that it is better to play with them, than to wish they wouldn’t play. :-)
