Cottontails

My husband is notorious for killing weedwhackers. So he clipped the tall grass by the swing-set by hand. Later on we found the dog digging and sniffing by a spot he clipped. CRAP! A cottontail nest! I stepped backwards only to find out the dig had pulled one out and left it right in my foot path. I was heartbroken, sad, disgusted, all at the same time. Needless to say it did not live.

This is all too common an occurrence around here. These darn cottontails just aren’t very bright! They build their nests in the WORST places! Sandboxes and swing sets seem to be very common.

Here is the freshly disturbed nest.

After looking up some info on the internet, we discovered that the nest would be fine if we left it covered in the grass clippings. that the momma would still take care of her babies, returning only at night. We could check on the nest every few days to see their growth and if they were being taken care of. I have even heard that the momma might move them to another location. But we weren’t so lucky. Actually, the dog wasn’t so lucky. his outdoor life has severely been disturbed by these awful little critters.

See the awful little critter after a week or two below.

Just awful, isn’t it?!

Actually, its about the most precious little thing ever! There are 4 or 5 of them. They are just about ready to leave. Teasing us and the dog by playing in the yard. As much as I like them, they need to leave. Every day we hope to find an empty nest so the dog can roam free, and the kids can play without worrying about stepping on bunnies. I guess that’s Linky Soda’s (the dog) karma for trying to eat one.

Last night, we spotted Momma deep in the backyard keeping watch over us and her nest from a distance. She wasn’t too bothered by us.

So cute! My sister learned the same lesson the first year she had her dog. Puppies must be on leashes through the field during spring time.
