About Us
I’m Heather. Wife to TJ. Mama to 3 magnificent children. In December of 2009, unhappy with our current situation, we chose to follow our hearts. We moved from Rutland, VT all the way to Seattle, WA and have never been happier. We are Unschoolers and mindful parenting advocates. We are always looking forward and are ready for the next great adventure no matter how big or small. This blog is my personal story of our radical journey.
I was born in Rutland, VT and lived there most of my life. I attended 13 years of school there in the same system, with mostly the same kids. I always disliked school and despised the rat race. I worked and attended community college when Skylar was born, but I found much more satisfaction staying home with him. Three boys later, I am an unschooling advocate, writer and speaker. I am shy in groups, outgoing one on one, but love meeting new people and trying new things. I love talking about my children and our lives.
TJ was also born in Rutland, VT. We actually met when we were 10 and 12, since our parents were friends. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight but our parents seemed to know there would be more. He is the CTO of Capes & Powers, Inc. He is one of those lucky people who knew what he would love for a career as a child and still loves it today. He has been a great advocate of peaceful parenting by facilitating SSUD’s meetings at unschooling conferences and making himself available to other dads. He also enjoys playing guitar and upright bass.
Skylar is our oldest. He is 11. His best friend is our dog, Linky Soda. He is talkative and energetic and loves to run and bounce and play! He is really outgoing and loves to organize large groups of kids into big outdoor games. He also has a passion for film-making and can usually be found working on his latest production. He loves to watch movies and engage in technical discussions about them. He’s a social butterfly and loves meeting new friends. He’s opinionated, and enjoys discussing just about everything, and a lot!
Milo turned 5 at the end of December. He has flaming red hair and fits the redhead stereotypes. He’s passionate and serious. He has a love of learning that most 5 year old kids lose when they enter school. He is learning to read and loves make-believe play. His sense of self is intact and strong and is apparent when he talks with adults. He’s a game player who enjoys making new rules. He loves video games, cheesy rice and lollipops. He’s a little accident prone but, he doesn’t let any injury get in his way!
Phoenix is our youngest at 1.5. He is a fun and bright and curious baby. He is shy in groups like me. He is very emotional and wears his heart on his sleeve. He loves Blue’s Clues, Mickey Mouse and when his feet stick out the bottom of his magic blanket.

I so appreciate your lack of anonymity, Heather. Glad to learn more about you and your family!
Best,
Wendy
