Last night we all hopped in the Suburban to go to Michael’s.  The kids need some modeling clay and set material for stop motion films.  The Michael’s here is big, laid out pretty well.  They carry a lot more interesting products too.  I’m pretty excited they are having a sale on canvasses as I’ve been wanting to start painting.  Oil or Acrylic?  It all seems to be in the eye of the painter.  I’ve painted with acrylic before, I’d really like to set myself up with oils.  I was  also able to replace the tempera paint that froze and clumped during the move.  While the red looked like lumpy paint, the yellow was reminiscent of newborn baby poop.  Definitely in need of new paint.  I can’t ever get out of that store without at least 5 things I didn’t plan on and without spending t least 20 dollars more than I had intended!

JoAnne’s was across the street.  The kids had all fallen asleep so it was just Skylar and I.  I left TJ with the sleeping babes in the car and Skylar and I ventured into fabric heaven to find something new for our chairs.  They are old and dingy and have been through things I don’t even want to mention.  I *will* mention the paint and marker and the food spills and the holes.  It’s time.  They need to be recovered.  I poured over a lot of fabric not really finding what I was looking for.  I’ve been on a green and purple kick for awhile so I sort of wanted something with both colors.  I also wanted something busy so that paint or food spills wouldn’t show up too bad.  Lastly, something bright and happy but not loud!  I think I managed to succeed in everything I was looking for except it doesn’t have purple.  It has pink instead!

When I finally got to the counter with my cut fabric and slip, the cashier said “That will be 5 dollars and 36 cents.”  I just looked at her and said, “Seriously!?”.  I didn’t notice it was on sale, but even so I just bought 4 yards of fabric for 5 dollars and 36 cents.  Score!!!

After we had our party the other day I woke up in the morning to see the mess and said, “Wow!  My house looks happy!”  In the fabric store I described some fabrics as looking “angry” or “loud”.  After I covered the chairs I noticed that they looked “happy” and “inviting”.  This actually brought up an interesting conversation with Skylar.  He didn’t really understand what I was saying.  He says that houses and fabrics and chairs can’t be “happy” or “loud”.  He is an extremely literal child.  In the past I had to be extremely clear with my words to him or he wouldn’t understand me.  This is the first time it came up in a long time and I’m glad it did.  It was fun explaining to him that I thought if the house were alive it would happy that people partied in it!  Also, that if the fabric had a voice, it would be screaming!

Oh and… the chairs really ARE inviting. Shortly after I finished I came into the kitchen and the table looked like this!

I saw this on Facebook. There is a picture of Kelly Lovejoy standing in Danielle Conger’s kitchen. Behind her there is a cabinet with a chalkboard face that I just thought was sooo cool! Naturally, I HAD to have a chalkboard cabinet of my very own.

It was really simple. Chalkboard spray paint and Masking Tape are the only material sI needed. Well, other than a husband to take the door off for me. The screws were completely stuck and I have extremely weak hands, most likely caused by loose tendons (or are they ligaments?).

I know these blurry pictures aren’t helping my cause. I really need to get adequate photo hosting. Or at least get caught up with it. :-) Anyway, the results gave a really cool effect and I’m looking forward to leaving love notes each morning for my family.

My ever so lovely broken toe. As if I didn’t have effed up enough pinky toes (a little trait I inherited from my mother, who inherited it from her father), I had to go and snap this one. I heard it too! I was breaking up a kid scuffle and Milo backed up just right and I heard (and felt) *SNAP* and I let out a howl. I tried taping it down to no avail. I was really hoping I could reposition it. I know there is nothing odd about this photo except my short little toes, but when I put weight on my foot my pinky toe sticks up and doesn’t touch the ground. I’m slightly self conscience about it. It’s weird. Luckily my toe is no longer this lovely shade of purple. This was a few weeks ago.

This is Skylar’s rock collection. I was trying to capture the picture as I saw it. Sparkly! My lens on my other camera is broken so I could only use a snapshot camera which isn’t doing what I want it to lately.

A few of these rocks he got from a mining set-up they have in Queechee. It’s artificial, but the rocks are real. He LOVES crystals. I got him a rocks and minerals poster that is hanging on his wall. I don’t know if he’s ever read it, but he enjoys looking at the different stones.

The kids are preparing for battle, I think. This is their attack dummy. He’s pretty tough. We had a pretty decent storm the other day with the high winds and he is still standing.

The cinder blocks probably had something to do with that.
A man and his grill. This is a good way for TJ to unwind without us after work. Give him some meat and let him sit by his grill with a jelly jar of wine.
Mike Wasowski!

Soccer season has begun again. Skylar hasn’t been on a winning team yet. For the past 2 seasons, and 3 or 4 teams, they always seem to have a losing record. However, he keeps going back and that’s a good indicator for me that he is truly enjoying himself! Lots of kids get hung up on winning and when it comes to soccer, he doesn’t. I’m really glad. I’m glad he likes it so much, because I sure do like watching him. He is such a character on the field, doing flips and clowning around. Always Skylar.

Milo started soccer this year for the first time. He really likes it, but it is sooo hard for him to get up so darn early. The U4 soccer has to get up and be at soccer at 8:15am!!! Milo is my late sleeper, he rarely pops out of bed until 10 or so. He went twice, and missed last weekend. I’m not sure if he’ll want to get up on Saturday. I’ll ask him before hand. Waking him up is NOT easy. I think we are all just amazed how big he getting! He is suddenly his own little person, maturing a little every day. It’s so amazing watching them all grow up.

We found a great experiment the other day. We made single servings of ice cream with no special equipment. Here you see my makeshift double boiler, with the custard inside. Laughable I know. but it totally worked! Especially since the bottom pan is warped and had a place for steam to escape.

After the custard cooled, we added the remaining ingredients. They are each in double ziplocs, to prevent leakage. And leak they did anyway! Good thing I made three.

Large ziplocs with ice and salt.

Milk shakes???

They were delicious anyway. We got a Mcdonald’s milkshake consistency. Not the soft serve we were looking. So they used straws instead of spoons.

We took apart an ordinary disposable diaper to find out what was inside. I put all the cottony material in a bowl thinking that, THAT was the absorbent material. Then we noticed a second pouch on the inside. It contained what looked like a 1/8 teaspoon of sugar crystals. I threw away the cottony stuff and put the crystals in the bowl instead realizing our find. Seriously, the amount of material in the bowl was like a “pinch”. I wish I had taken a picture of it for the full effect.

We added 1/4 cup of water at a time. Each time the polymer kept absorbing the water and expanding.

I think we made it up to about 1 and 3/4 cups before it wouldn’t expand anymore.

Our findings? We should really only have to change Phoenix once a day with this kind of absorbency!

…and speaking of expanding materials… we concluded that these lizards, which began at 3 inches and expanded beyond 6, must be made of something similar. Although they absorb at a MUCH slower rate, taking 3 days to fully grow.

I didn’t carve any pumpkins this year. I usually go all out. the more kids I have… the less time for pumpkins! These “suckers” took forever. I carved these in 2006 for the Greatest Rock and Roll Band on Earth. The Supersuckers. Just thought I’d show them off a little here. You can also see the pumpkins here on their MySpace music page.

Enjoy!

We’ve never beat the corn maze. It was a big event!

I’m not sure if it’s the haircut (doubtful) but Skylar has been getting more adventurous with his food. He recently tried fresh coconut and even french onion soup. If you know Skylar you would know that he does not eat much more than cheeseburgers, tacos, and (f***ing) carrots.

That’s also a duct tape hat that Skylar made by following a tutorial we found on YouTube. Inspired by Dorkey5’s Boredom Buster Blog

TJ’s birthday was the other day. Milo and I made this. We decorated the cover to a blank journal. He picked out all the paper and ripped strips. Skylar made him a really cool bank out of a water jug.

Awwwww.

We really didn’t make use of this nearly enough this year. This is the patio we made from my mom’s old pool deck. The foliage and the sun light peeking in were so perfect I had to take a picture before all the leaves were gone.

We found enough wild grapes in the backyard to make jelly.

I haven’t had much time lately. Milo is as demanding right now as Phoenix. I’m really trying to keep the little guy happy. If asking a 3 year old to “Wait a minute” didn’t fly before, it’s DEFINITELY not going to fly now! So I figured I’d just post some pictures I’ve had. Unfortunately, I never seem to have time to take the pictures I want either! Enjoy!
Ahhh… the broken leg. We found the perfect pillow at K-Mart so he could play on the floor and have some back support. We just flipped it around backwards. Linky Soda has been quite protective of Milo lately. He cuddles up with him any chance he gets. Milo, is not always so happy about that. On this day, they were buddies.

We made a “coffee table computer” out of Milo’s PC. he doesn’t even have to move to use it! I know… every geeks dream! He’s had to keep that leg elevated this entire time so it worked out perfectly.

Milo’s sweet ride. This is how he gets from place to place. Here he is with his new Spiderman and Venom dart tag game. Good exercise for Mommy and Pops… chasing darts.

Is there anyone on earth who wouldn’t enjoy a little corn starch and water? We love this stuff.
Here they are on a ride at the Addison County Field Days. Milo was so happy to be able get on! He REALLY wanted to go down the slide, this was the next best thing. Phoenix didn’t make the height requirement so he and I took pictures.
I took this picture and uploaded it. I’m still trying to figure out where the time went…

…it seems like I took THIS picture of Skylar and Milo only yesterday.
That’s funny. I thought Milo was painting in blue watercolor!? That’s what happens when you mix all the colors. By the way, the Formica kitchen table is the best invention ever. I inherited from my grandmother. It’s not pretty, but it is oh so cleanable. If “cleanable” is a word. (oh god, wallpaper alert. please excuse the wallpaper, someday I’ll get around to it, I swear)

Look what I created while trying to clean up the watercolors! A bed-sheet. Seriously. Doesn’t that look like a bed-sheet print? Where’s Martha Stewart when I need her?

And here is Skylar, the famous artist, with his newest creation, “The Painted Baby”. I think he originally wanted to blow it up or set it on fire, but he settled on shooting fire out of the baby’s mouth instead. (Video Coming soon.) I’m also quite certain he is going to blow up his “Doodle Monster” instead. Possible video coming soon. Disclaimer: No babies were actually painted during this photo shoot.

Here are our dinner guests. Although they need no introduction, they are from left to right, Polyphemus the Cyclops, Athena the Goddess of Wisdom, Medusa the Gorgon, a Harpy, and Perseus the hero that cut off the head of Medusa. Another possible video.

Who knew this would be so much fun! Awhile back we discovered Eepybird. They have some of the most elaborate and amzing “soda fountains” EVER! Although our aren’t fancy it was still a lot of fun!

We started by drilling the caps and the Mentos.

The Skylar and I assembled the quick-release caps.

Skylar and TJ assembled the fountains.

We’ve been keeping busy the last few days. And learning quite a few new things! We finished up watching the last Planet Earth disc in HD-DVD in our room above the garage. Really great series. Really spectacular photography (or is that cinematography?). I certainly enjoyed almost every minute of it.

That room has nearly the space of our old house. It’s huge. I guess you could call it the recreation, media, music, art, office, storage, game and party room. One big corner is the kids art space. They are free to draw or paint, even on the walls. Since it’s spring, we decided that a new beginning was in order. We primed the walls to get ready for some new artwork. First things first. Fingerpaints on the wall bleed through primer a lot. Second, dry erase markers on the wall bleed through primer the MOST. As if we didn’t even paint over them! It took some creative “smearing” to get rid of that. Anyway… it isn’t pretty, but its primed and ready for color again! Oh… and contrary to popular belief, falling down a flight of stairs because you are in a rush to wash paintbrushes, does not put one into labor. It just plain old hurts.

We finally got to the garden today! The kids were so much more involved this year than last year! We went up to this great market about 30 minutes away. I’m always pleased with their plants. They are always healthy and fruitful. We do start seeds each year. I do it mostly so the kids can watch the seedlings sprout. Unfortunately, I do not have a good growing space to start our own veggies so our plants usually go to waste as they are not hardy enough to survive.

Well all you southerners who are already reaping the benefits of your gardens can giggle at me. It will be WEEKS before anything happens at all in here! But at least I can say its planted (are running about a week behind schedule). The kids got more involved this year which really made me happy. They really liked picking out plants and Skylar is happy to be planting his own flower garden tomorrow. He picked out a beautiful peony as his favorite, which he affectionately named a “pee-on-me”. We also got some nasturtiums. Milo picked them out. I read on someone’s blog that the flowers were edible. Anyone know?

Skylar had a soccer game during this weekends heat wave. It was 95 or so. The dandelion seeds were blowing in the air so thick, that it looked like snow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before. It was strange, and somewhat annoying. I tried taking photos, but the little fuzzies wouldn’t show up in a picture.

Later on we finished up the garden, the fence (we have lots of critters around here) and picking up our mess. The kids watered the garden. And themselves.

I’ve sort of over done it today. I’ve had 3753993 Braxton hicks contractions. But no real ones. I’m going to spend the next 4 weeks driving myself nuts. I’m really excited, nervous, freaking out, impatient, ready to meet our baby!
